Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters

In year 6 we have already begun to explore our new Geography topic – Natural disasters.

We have had a lot to talk about already with Hurricane Irma and Storm Aileen.

Can you find out anything about volcanoes?

  • How are they formed?
  • What makes them erupt?
  • How much damage do they cause?
  • What temperatures can the lava reach?

Leave your notes in the comments below.

  1. 1. Deep down inside the Earth , between the iron core and the very thin crust at the top , there is a solid piece of rock called the mantle. When the rock from the mantle melts, it moves towards the surface through the crust and releases pent-up gases.
    2. Extremely high temperature causes the rock to melt and become Magma. When a load of Magma has formed , it rises toward the Earths surface. Magma that reaches the top , turns into lava then erupts.
    3. Volcanoes can cause to damage structures , buildings , wildlife etc. as well as causing deaths. Residents located close to volcanoes often receive timely notice before an eruption occurs.
    4. Lava normally is between 700 degrees Celsius – 1200 degrees Celsius. Lava is a molten rock that comes out of a volcano during an eruption.

  2. A volcano is a landform [usually a mountain ]where molten rock erupts through the surface to the planet.

Volcanoes erupt when magma from within the Earths upper mantle works its way to the surface.

Volcanoes cause physical damage to buildings, wild life as well as posing health risks.

The temperature of lava can be between 750 degrees celsius and 1250 degrees celsius.

  3. Inside the earth is red hot liquid rock, called Magma. When the Magma rises to the earth’s surface, it causes bubbles of gas to appear in it which then cause the explosion. The hot molten rock, ash and gases escape from an opening in the Earth’s surface. As a volcano erupts, it spills lava that flows down slope. Hot ash and gases are thrown into the air. The lava can reach temperatures of 1200 degrees Celsius. Volcanoes can cause Earthquakes, Fast floods, Mud slides and rock falls The molten rock and ash solidify as they cool, forming the distinctive volcano rock.

  4. How are volcanoes formed ?

Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth’s upper mantle works it’s way to the surface . At the surface, time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.

    What makes them erupt?

A volcano is a mountain from where the molten rocks or magma erupts through the surface. In simple terms, a volcano is an opening in the Earth’s surface from which the molten rocks and gases escape out. Once the magma erupts through the Earth’s surface, it’s called Lava.

How much damage dose it cause?

Volcanoes cause physical damage to buildings, wildlife, local vegetation and the atmosphere, as well as posing health risks. Residences within the vicinity of a volcanic eruption often receive timely notice before an eruption occurs. This reduces the likelihood of danger .

    What temperatures can Lava reach?

When first erupted from a volcano vent , lava is a liquid, usually at temperatures from 700 to 1200 oc [1292 to 2192 of ].

  5. Volcanoes are formed when magma from within the Earth’s upper mantle works its way to the surface. At the surface it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits. Over time as the volcano continues to erupt, it will get bigger and bigger.
Magma raises through cracks or weaknesses in the Earths crusts. When this pressure is released, magma explodes to the surface causing a volcanic eruption.
Volcanic eruptions can cause earthquakes, fast floods, mud slides and rock falls. Lava can travel very far and burn, bury or damage anything in it.

  6. An active volcano is one that has had at least 1 eruption during the past 10,000 years.
The nearest one to us is Katla in Iceland.

  7. Magma pushes up from inside the Earth through the surface and escapes. That forms a volcano.
The volcano erupts when hot Milton rock, ashes and gases escape.
A lot of damage can happen. Poisonous gases. Hot lava (1200 degrees Celsius) can destroy everything it touches.
    Volcanoes can cause earthquakes.
